Donkeys Liberated from Hauling Illegal Charcoal

Donkeys are still used as the main mode of transport to carry heavy bags of charcoal from Nyekweri forest to the market. One group was spotted during the evening hours on 3rd May 2015. The Team destroyed the charcoal then released the donkeys after the owners fled when they heard the sound of our car. The donkeys were all overloaded & it was a pity to see them like that. Destruction of Nyekweri forest is still witnessed, & to save the remaining part, a joint effort is needed from all the concerned conservation organizations. We can’t forget, either, that the local community is also the custodian of this forest, and we need them to continue helping us to protect the Mara Ecosystem.
